Downtime in Stony Brook

Whenever I travel, I like to slip in a day that I refer to as a down day.  When I backpacked my way through Australia, I called it a dark day...  It's just a day where I didn't do much in the way of sightseeing or traveling.  I might have done some laundry (which sometimes amounted to washing my boxers in the sink and hanging them in my "single" youth hostel room).  Or, I might have read up on my next destination in the Lonely Planet, highlighting some of the must see stuff.

Not sure what a Lonely Planet is?  Well, let me tell you.  Long before Google, and even long after, there used to be this thing that travelers would use called a guide book.  For me, the best was always the Lonely Planet.  Truth is, they still exist, but I opted to go freelance on this trip, so we are going with Google.

Now, back to the down day.  Usually I wouldn't have a day like this so early in a trip, but my daughter needed some cuz time, and I wanted to see the family.  It just worked out.  My (now giant) nephews (16 & 17) got to take the Mustang out for a spin or two.  They came back in one piece, as did the automobile.  Jaden got some Lacrosse tips from his cuz, whose high school Lacrosse team won the NY state championship this year!  And most important, Nana got to spend a little more time with her grand babies!  It was a nice (in-between refereeing), relaxing day!

To give Mazzy the most time possible with her BFF, we took the Port Jefferson ferry to Bridgeport CT, rather than drive to the tip of Long Island.  Usually, I would take some pictures out on the water at sunset.  It was beautiful.  But when my shoulder, and heart, are required by my baby (on-demand) in-between her phone calls, FaceTimes and txts to the mainland, it just wasn't meant to be.

The moon was so impressive as it rose above the highway ahead of us tonight.  I think it brought us all back down to earth.  Our feelings, our hopes, our dreams.  They all came out on that highway in Rhode Island tonight.

We arrived in Newport RI at 10pm.  We're staying at a cute little inn on the waterfront.  There's a cupcake shop across the street, and a toy store next door.  Life is good...  We walked down the street to get a slice of pizza and called it a night.  Amen.
