We jumped in the muscle car at the crack of 11:15am (as a rock star does) and set out on our island adventure. Our first stop was at a pastry shop that features Starbucks Coffee. It's not a Starbucks, they just feature the coffee, as there are NO corporate franchises allowed on Martha's Vineyard. Good for them for keeping it real. I wish we could have done that in Venice... Truth is, I would rather find a local coffee joint, but my daughter loves her Starbucks. Sigh. It's a work in progress...
Martha's Vineyard is beautiful. Green trees and rock stone walls divide large plots of green grassland (The rock stone walls remind me of my travels through Wales and Ireland as a kid). Some are farms. Some are modest beach cottages. Some are swanky estates. The former first family is here too, but we never bumped into them.
Jaden enjoyed a quick dip in the water at the little village of Chilmark. This is where Jaws was filmed many years ago. The swim was unplanned (As they often are when you have a surf rat for a son...). No biggie, but I didn't have a towel. A kind woman who saw that I was in need of one for my rather wet boy, lent us one. She told me we could keep it in case we needed it again later. Paul added, "That's the Vineyard for ya!" I dried off my son, and graciously returned the towel!
We had lunch at a great locals spot, the Chilmark General Store. They are known for their pizza, so we all indulged! That is, except JJ. He grabbed a stock of celery and nibbled it down like a rabbit. Yup, my kids are nuts! But my policy is to never discourage fruit or veggies!
After our nice lunch stop, we drove out to Aquinnah (Formerly known as Gay Head until it was changed back to its original Wampanoag Indian name in 1997). This is another picturesque spot that overlooks the ocean, and other nearby islands. There's a cute brick lighthouse near lands end as well. Apparently, a few years back the lighthouse was on the brink of falling into the ocean. But, the town hired a heavy duty house moving company to come in and move the lighthouse inland. This was no easy feat, but in the end, they were able to save the lighthouse!
We were scheduled to take the 5pm ferry back to the mainland, but Jaden and Kai were having such a great time playing in the dirt with trucks and tractors, I figured we'd just take a later ferry so they could play a little longer. "Inspired" by Kai, as Jaden told me, he now "loves Bruder trucks too." So, I did the right thing, and ordered him a couple of Bruder trucks on Amazon for his birthday last night... They should be there by the time we get home!
As we made our way back to the mainland on the ferry, I finally got that water sunset picture I wanted a few nights ago, and shared it with someone special. All is well with the Donaldson brood. Next stop, Plymouth Rock. Oh, and something tells me that Paul and I won't wait another 20 years to see each other again!

Chillin' in Chilmark. Jaden refuses to take his Lakers
shirt off while we are in New England. A
boy after his dad's heart!
In the water, or skipping rocks on it
Loving my first baby
Celery, instead of Pizza?
"I'm on top of the world"
