It's been nearly three weeks since I've seen my kiddos, so I was eager to get this journey started! At 5:15am, my bags were packed and an Uber was on its way. I was off!
Between naps on the plane, I read the book I had packed for Jaden about the Declaration of Independence. It's been awhile, so I figured I had better refresh my memory before we get to Philadelphia! Personally, I'm mostly looking forward to lunch at Geno's and Pats, but since we're going to be in the birthplace of The United States of America, we had better go see some of the really important stuff too. You know, like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell! Oh, and the Rocky steps... ;)
I arrived in Philadelphia right on time and my bag was already waiting for me at the carousel. Delta?! Now comes the hard part. With so many SUVs to choose from, I was stumped. But, I finally opted for something a little less SUV. Something a little more, you know, Summer! Or as some might say, something that screams midlife crisis... Said the "young" dad with the graying beard. Arrrrg!!!
But when I pulled up to Aunt Christina and Uncle Seth's house in Mechanicsburg PA in a white convertible Mustang and saw the huge smile on Jaden's face, I knew that I had made the right choice! He even jumped in to pull it up in the driveway with me. My babies were such a sight for sore eyes! I'm so excited to do this trip with them!
Now back to the Mustang. Yes, it's a far cry from the green and white bubble-top camper van we traveled in as kids, but don't think for a minute that my dad didn't want to do the same thing as me. If he had it his way, we would have traveled the country in a racing green Bug-eyed Sprite (The car he gave up shortly after I was born). But, he didn't have it his way. Sigh. I guess there are some advantages to being a single dad...
Like much of this part of the country, Pennsylvania is lush and green. I drove down the turnpike amongst the farms and rolling hills that are surrounded by dense forests of trees. Occasional herds of cows dotted the countryside. It was a beautiful drive as the sun was going down.
But most beautiful, is my awesome little niece, Veronica. She's a doll, and I'm so happy to finally have met her! Tonight we're staying at Christina, Seth and Veronica's amazing home in the woods! After hanging by the backyard fire pit, where the kids toasted marshmallows, the long day had hit us all. The kiddos were asleep before their heads hit the pillows and I'm not too far behind them!

Sorry. I had to do it...! I once got yelled at for
doing this at customs in London.
I went to pick up an SUV, but ended up with
something that's a little more "Summer." Can
you guess?!
We're no longer in Los Angeles!
A boy and his new ride.
JJ was out before his head hit the pillow!
